Pink Ink Rivers and Lakes Synopsis and Plot Summary

The waterway opera group in the Hangjiahu region was first seen long before Qianlong during the Qing Dynasty. They relied on boats as a method of transport to get between water towns and towns for several years in order to avail of temple fairs, or to be a part of large families to celebrate birthdays.

In the time between Tongzhi and Guangxu the waterway Jingban was first discovered in Hangjiahu. In the height of its popularity there were more than 30 organizations selling performing arts and operas as well as entertaining gods and people, creating a unique culture phenomenon.

From the latter part of the Qing Dynasty to the 1930s and the 1940s, Jiaxing served as the performing center for the Shuilu Beijing troupe for a hundred years. Numerous opera companies and actors from the north and south came together, setting the foundations in the development of Beijing opera, which was the first national stage of the opera that was well-known in northern cities.
