Kunpeng and Butterfly Synopsis and Plot Summary

Zhuang Zhou was originally a student at the aristocratic academy in Chu. State of Chu. His father was arrested by a shady official, while his whole family were taken and murdered. Prior to the incident Zhuang Zhou ran away from home to escape his marriage and set out to search for his friend from childhood Shuiyue who was absent for a long time.

Zhuang Zhou was taken to Baiyu Town in Funiu Mountain to study Taoism with a teacher but he decided to drop his studies due to his disagreement with the master. He moved down the mountain to become an official of the lacquer garden within Mengdi, Song State. Zhuang Zhou along with Shuiyue suffered through hardships, and eventually got married.

Zhuang Zhou made a buck by selling straw sandals. He was poor and wrote books on understanding Taoism and gained fame with the royals. He was king Wei from Chu offered Zhuang Zhou to be prime minister, but he backed up. He opted for a relaxed and regular life to achieve the vision of Kunpeng expanding its wings and sleeping without rest and to fulfill Zhuangzi’s dream of becoming an insect in the midst of the rest of the world.
