Jackie Chan (born April 7, 1955 in Hong Kong) is a Chinese film, television and stage actor. He has also worked as a film director, singer, screenwriter, producer and film editor.
He began working in the entertainment industry in 1971 as an actor and martial arts stuntman. Drunken Master, an action film from 1978, established his kung fu comedy style. The 1980 action film ” Young Master”, directed and acted he by, broke Hong Kong’s box-office record.
He starred and directed in the 1983 action film Project A. In 1986, his action film Police Story (which he also starred in) became a Hong Kong representative police and gangster movie. In 1989 he received the Order of the British Empire. His first Mandarin album was released in 1992.
He was also awarded Best Actor at the Taiwan Golden Horse Film Awards twice in a year for his roles, both as Police Story 3 Super Cop (with Michael Caine) and Crime Squad (with John C. Reilly).
Time magazine named Drunken Master II in the Kung Fu film Drunken Master in 1994 one of the Top Ten Films in the World. In 1995 the action movie Rumble in the Bronx set a new North American record for foreign-language films.
Since 1998, his action films Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour have established him as a Hollywood actor. They also set the record for Hollywood movies with Chinese stars.
In 2003, his name was included in the list of the “Top Ten People” of the year who influenced China. He was the Best Actor Award winner at the 25th China Film Golden Rooster Awards in 2004 for his role as a detective in ” New Police Story”.
The romantic film starring him, ” The Myth”, grossed over a hundred million yuan (US$120,000,000) in Asia. The New York Times listed him as the top “20 Greatest Action Movie Stars of All Time”. Guinness World Records awarded him the title of “Actor with Most Stunts”.
He was the first Chinese actor who received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 at the 89th Academy Awards. In 2019, he received the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Great Britain Award Albert R. Broccoli Award. In 2024 he will be seen in the romantic drama ” Legend”.
